HSSH is officially the top blockbuster of 1999
2000 Feb, The Hindu
Sooraj Barjatya-Salman Khan's blockbuster combo starrer Hum Saath Saath Hain has become the highest grossing film of last year by overtaking David Dhawan's super duper hit Biwi No. 1 at the box office. Biwi No. 1 also had Salman In the main lead role.  Last year's top three grossers (Hum Saath Saath Hain, Biwi No. 1 and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) belonged to Salman Khan. This is indeed extremely rare feat in the history of Indian Cinema, apart from Amitabh Bachchan who had done similar feat in 1978,no one had done similar kind of magic at the box-office. While David Dhawan's Biwi No. 1 had nett grossed 29 crores at the box office in its overall run, the Rajshri's blockbuster has almost  reached the mark of 35 crores in just fourteen weeks. HSSH was released on record breaking number of prints 405 (including 121 in Overseas territory ). The first day response of this Sooraj Barjatya's film was historical and recorded the highest first day box-office collection everywhere except Delhi-U.P. (particularly U.P.) . In its first week itself HSSH nett grossed 1.02 crores from Bombay alone (16 screens) which no film in the history of Indian Cinema has reached such pinnacle . In some places collections were affected due to Pre Diwali but it couldn't do much damage. Some jealous industry insiders has spread the lie that the film was not doing well in its first week but the figures speaks the actual truth as the first week collections were historical everywhere. The business of this film is still strong everywhere except Uttar Pradesh where it has underperformed . In overall run it is expected to rake 40 crores at the box-office.

According to most trustable trade magazine Film Information,it has already crossed the box-office collections of Karan Arjun (35 crores), Border (32 crores), Biwi No. 1 (29 crores) and Dil Toh Pagal Hai (26 crores) at the box-office. It's a super duper hit in India as well as Overseas but no match to Rajshri's earlier top blockbusters Hum Aapke Hain Koun and Maine Pyar Kiya. HSSH is the first ever Bollywood venture to break into the US Top 10 charts, and did better in the US than such Hollywood top blockbusters like Eyes Wide Shut and Blair Witch Project. In the UK too, HSSH broke into the top 10, following the successful trend established by 1998's Dil Se and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
