What is this minority audience." and what sort of films does it want to see on the Hindi screen? If you derive more satisfaction from seeing a film like "Garm Hawa" rather than films like "Jugnu",  "Yaadon Ki Baaraat" or "Bobby", then you are "the minority "audience. film producers, especially Hindi And Alm producers, have never made films for you, because for them you do not exist.

Your miserable patronage at the box-office does not add those Innumerable zeroes to collection figures touted week after week in the Trade Journal Advertisements as "Breaking All Records etc. etc.

At about total productions of around 450 films were released this year among which the most successful films of the year were Bobby, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Jugnu, Zanjeer, Loafer, Anuraag, Daag, Victoria No.203, Kahani Kismet Ki, Dharma, Samadhi, Heera, Namak Haraam, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Do Chor, Anhonee, Manchali, Jaise Ko Taisa, Abhimaan, Jheel Ke Uss Paar, Jwar Bhata, Keemat, Anamika, Do Phool, Do Yaar, Tanhaai, Naag Mere Saathi, GharibNawaz, Anokhi Ada, Aaj Ki Tazaa Khabar, Dhund, Garam Hava, Kuchhe Dhaage, Suraj Aur Chanda, Hanste Zakhm and Samjhauta.

The top flops of the year were Shareef Budmash, Joshila, Raja Rani, Chhupa Rustom Heera Panna and Banarsi Babu. Most of these flops has Dev Anand in the leading roles.

We suppose now Raj Kapoor will make a sequel called " Bobby Ki Beti '  or perhaps ' Bobby ka Baap ' , another autobiography! Why not ' Bobby Rani Aur Jugnu Jaani ' ? Someone could also bring out ' Bobby ki Baaraat ' and both ... But morals apart, it can not be denied that Bobby and Yaadon Ki Baaraat are roaring box-office successes just as Pramod Chakraborty's ludicrous ' Jugnu ' was before Bobby and Yaadon Ki Baaraat came along to surpass it.

After Dharma, Victoria No.203 and Zanjeer become big hits at the box-office , the industry suddenly  developed a lot of respect for veteran Pran who has reached newer heights of stardom. Premnath is also hot with Bobby. Veterans stars Surendranath, Jalraj and Trilok Kapoor has also began to get work in film industry after a long time

After Apna Desh Rajesh Khanna starrers are halting left and right at the box-office. He has already lost his number one position to Dharmendra by the end of the last year due to back-to-back big flops. In between flops like Dil Daulat Duniya, Bawarchi, Joru Ka Ghulam, Maalik, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Shehzada and Raja Rani there were Daag and Namak Haraam but the credit of these two successful films went to Rakhee and Lambu Amitabh  . Rakhee and  Amitabh Bachchan made absolute kimma of Rajesh in Daag and Namak Haraam. However, in terms of box-office points, it was the year of Dharmendra undoubtedly with hits like Jugnu, Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Loafer, Kahani Kismet Ki, Do Chor, Samadhi, Jwar Bhata, Jheel Ke Uss Paar and Keemat. With success of these films Dharmendra is flying very high. Year by Year Dharmendra is become Rock solid at the box-office. Lambu Amitabh Bachchan who had series of flops has become a hot favorite with the hit like Zanjeer, Abhimaan and Namak Haraam, in which he made absolute kimma of Rajesh Khanna. Sunil Dutt who had rough patch due to flopping of his own production Resham Aur Shera is back with bang with success of Heera. Jeetendra and Shashi Kapoor are also hot favourites in the wake of Jaise Ko Taisa and Aa Gale Lag Jaa. But the man of the year was undoubtedly Raj Kapoor with phenomenal success of Bobby. Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapoor have become hot favorite with success of Bobby. The producers are willing to sign Rishi Kapoor. BR Chopra who had faced several loss with the failure of Dastaan made a small budget flick Dhund. The film unfortunately become a successful at the box-office and BR Chopra is once again flying high. However it was a bad year for heroine number one Hema Maili who had just one super duper hit Jugnu as against several flops.  Sanjeev Kumar, the gifted artist of film industry was smiling throughout the year as his four starrers Anhonee, Manchali, Anamika amd Suraj Aur Chanda proved successful . Today Sanjeev is easily the most talented star among the new-set of actors. 1973 has also proved to be lucky for small budget films which raked in very good moolahs at the box-office. Victoria No. 203, Dharma, Dhund and Hanste Zakhm were box-office successes , however, they were successes due to other factors not because of Navin Nischol.

Saudagar and Achanak were the best work of the 1973 but both this films flopped miserably at the box-office because our audiences like to see maar dhaad and super trashy film like Jugnu. How does one explain the super duper success of a super trash film like Jugnu?

1973 will also go down in the little blue book as the year-of-the- great-star-marriages and instant families! Rajesh n' Dimple, Gulzar n' Raakhee, Amitabh n' Jaya, Somu n' Tanuja and by the time this comes in print, a good many more wickets will have probably fallen too! Suddenly, to be a bachelor is to be a cross between a moron, a creep and a way out obsolete vegetable! Bachelorhood and its swinging aura-Birds n' Booze-has all at once been overtaken by the 'till death/flops do us apart chapter. Presumably this chapter will be non-flmy.
Rajesh Khanna, ex-phenomenon, present husband of ex-actress Dimple Kapadia set the marriage ball rolling. Sensationally! In fact the whole thing was done almost in shotgun style! His seven year yaari pyaari with a sometime model, sometime actress, but always a devotee, came to a screeching halt after his whirlwind Juhu-Khandala episode; episode, which by now must be compulsory reading in most Khanna University syllabuses! Raakhee and Gulzar followed their example-minus the sensation. Theirs was a "comparatively" quieter affair, complete with the bride blushing et al.

The only thrill of the evening was provided by the pundit who failed to turn up! Amitabh and Jaya delighted, more than thrilled their fans, when they said "yes" over a pundit (not literally of course!), relatives and very close friends, in a real quiet ceremony. It must have been a big whoopee to their fans individually n' collectively-who seemed to be following their romancing far more keenly than their movies. Can't frankly blame them too much. Zanjeer', 'Abhimaan' and 'Namak Haraam' however, have put everything right once and for all. I will not marry, Jaya or any other actress, in retrospect, makes a fascinating historical headline! Somu from the house of Mukerjis and Tanuja from the house of Samarths were very much more than good friends. And for quite some time too. And sources close to them have always maintain. ed that D-day was coming, coming.....

1973 will  be remembered as the year of Dharmendra, Raj Kapoor, Marriages and to some extent Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor. Among heroines Rekha showed her box-office potential with super successful films like Kahani Kismet Ki, Dharma and Namak Haraam. Zeenat Aman is also a hot favorite with phenomenal success of Yaadon Ki Baaraat and a great success in Dhund. Zeenat Aman was another Dev Anand's discovery! . Mumtaz consolidated with a super hit like Loafer and a decent hit like Jheel Ke Uss Paar. Heroine Number one Hema Malini gave a super duper hit Jugnu ass against many big flops. This was not so good year for dream girl Hema. Zanjeer, Anamika and Abhimaan were shot in arm for Guddi girl Jaya Bhaduri. Jaya has her own craze among 'air-conditioned' upper classes. They like her because they themselves could never have produced anything like her. The middle class liked her because Jaya was one of them. Jaya has an all-India image. She can look a Maharashtrian, a Gujarati and a Bengali as the role demands.
